Iron Ore Transport Studies – South Australia

Iron Ore Transport Studies – South Australia

concept studies, rail operational planning and commercial expertise

What was the challenge?

A South Australian iron ore producer was contemplating the development of a new, high tonnage ore supply to be transported to a terminal adjacent to an existing port and industrial area.

Involving significant haulage distances, the operating cost was deemed a major challenge that would require innovative solutions. To address the complexities driven by high cost, the client specifically sought advice drawn from direct experience with a successful track record in innovative solutions for high cost options in major railway developments.

What we did

Projectus’ was selected based on the experience of Managing Director, rail development expert Bryce Jones. Working with another South Australian engineering consultant, we led the investigations and provided strategic advice on options and indicative operating costs.

The initial advice was well received, leading to an extension of our engagement to lead the subsequent pre-concept level study into alternative solutions involving major heavy haul railways with combinations of new greenfield and upgraded existing railways at tonnages up to 10Mtpa.

What was the outcome?

To deliver a result for the client, our knowledge and experience in high capacity heavy haul railways and rail systems in Queensland and Western Australia was a source of significant advantage. Pushing the envelope of possibilities not previously seen in South Australia, this work drew upon our capabilities in all aspects of railway development.

Focused on the requisite commercially driven strategies, track configuration, supply chain operations planning and modelling, technical track and rolling stock requirements, and rail regulations and operating cost modelling, a comprehensive study report was delivered, along with greenfield track designs provided by the engineering consultant.

The resulting knowledge from Projectus’ study enabled the client to continue with mine development studies, building on the detail provided across indicative railway capital costs and ore haulage costs.

At time of publication, the client is reviewing all possible options available.
